Essential Steps to Prepare Your Home For Winter

Ensure your home is ready for colder days with these winter preparation tips:

1. Protect Your Pipes and Faucets:

  • Outdoor Faucets: Disconnect and store garden hoses. Use foam covers or insulate outdoor faucets to prevent freezing and damage.

  • Exposed Pipes: Wrap exposed pipes in unheated areas with insulation or heat tape to prevent them from freezing and bursting.

2. Optimize Your Heater:

  • Keep your heater set to at least 68°F, even when you’re not home, to maintain consistent warmth and prevent your pipes from freezing.

  • Schedule an HVAC check-up to ensure your system is operating efficiently.

3. Take Care of Indoor Sinks:

  • On especially cold nights, leave a slow drip running from indoor faucets, particularly for sinks located along exterior walls. This can help prevent pipes from freezing.

4. Check for Drafts:

  • Seal windows and doors with weatherstripping or caulk to keep warm air in and cold air out.

  • Use draft stoppers at the bottom of doors to maintain indoor temperatures.

5. Prepare Your Fireplace (If Applicable):

  • Have your chimney inspected and cleaned if you plan to use your fireplace.

  • Stock up on firewood or check the operation of your gas logs.

6. Test Your Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Detectors:

  • Heating appliances can increase the risk of fire or carbon monoxide buildup. Make sure detectors are working and have fresh batteries.

7. Reverse Ceiling Fans:

  • Set ceiling fans to spin clockwise at a low speed to push warm air back down into living spaces.

Taking these steps will help ensure your home stays warm and safe through the winter weather.

Stay prepared and enjoy the season!
